Starting and running your own business is the single most successful way to move up the economic ladder. It’s exciting, it’s fun, you can set your own hours, and no boss is telling you what to do. You’ll be able to do what you’ve always wanted to do and get paid for it. What could be better?
There’s a lot to do before you open your doors to customers, and we’ll talk about that as we go along. First, though, we want to offer up some questions you’ll need to answer.
Why? Why do you want to start your own business?
Stupid question, right? Wrong. It’s the most important question, because it will guide you to choosing the kind of business to start.
Most people say they want to start the business to make money. You can do that working for somebody else. You can do that robbing banks, or selling a kidney, too, but there are downsides to those approaches. So, is this something you’ve always wanted to do, such as run a circus?
Maybe it’s something you know about and believe you can charge people for doing it. Perhaps you’re a computer nerd and spend most of your day on the internet. You see so many boring, ugly websites, and know you could do much better. You’ve got a computer, the basic software is free, get started!
There’s no harm in trying, and it doesn’t cost much to start the business. Which is why there are already lots of people doing it. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, population 64,000, there are already eight companies that create websites. In Los Angeles, there are well over one hundred. You’ll need a hook, something that makes you different.
