The Administration isn’t incompetent, it’s dangerously stupid.
There is a special kind of stupidity called the Dunning-Kruger Effect. It’s commonly believed to refer to the simple overestimation of one’s knowledge or competence. It is not. It is the phenomenon of someone actually believing himself to be very superior in a domain when he in fact is barely knowledgeable: the dunce who has read a single headline and then believes himself superior to an acknowledged grand master.
The cause is a lack of introspection, or even of a need for self-examination. Sufferers of the effect (different from sufferers from other’s affliction with the condition such as the common people in flyover country) are almost invariably narcissists. Encyclopedia Britanica points us in a particular direction:
Later investigations of the Dunning-Kruger effect explored its influence in a variety of other domains, including business, medicine, and politics. For example, a study published in 2018 indicated that Americans who know relatively little about politics and government are more likely than other Americans to overestimate their knowledge of those topics. Moreover, according to the study, that tendency seems to be more pronounced in partisan contexts in which people consciously think of themselves as supporters of one or the other (Republican or Democratic) major political party.
Examples abound.
In this memorable show, Dunning-Kruger won an ig Noble Prize
People who do not understand issues should not be in charge of fixing them.
The extent of the incompetence is stunning. Didn't know there was a name for it, so thanks. I guess I'll try to remember the name as people being D-K'ed only we seem to be the ones getting shafted. Not sure how creating even more transfer programs would be good for the economy. We already face a Social Security shortfall as fewer worker's taxes go to a growing number of seniors. The drive to a green economy by forcing technology changes not yet ready seems foolish in the extreme and the green advocates think change can be ordered ignoring economics. And a Congress discovering that no, you can't print money forever with no consequences.
Sadly I suspect our time of reality is now happening. With the next Fed rate increase, the debt service will become a very real concern in terms of outlays. And if history is a guide interest rates must surpass inflation to get it under control thus that pesky debt service means deep cuts somewhere or huge tax increases on all. The pundits aren't saying much which suggests the public isn't being informed about what's to come. Some very angry days are about to arrive.
